Greetings by KANIE Norichika, Chair

SDGs sought by the world and SDGs from Japan ―SDGs action toward change―

The COVID-19 pandemic that struck the world in early 2020 put a sudden brake on our activities toward SDGs right after entering the “Decade of Action”. Realization of SDGs was already difficult in ordinary times, and now it is said to have become even more difficult. Against this background, we, at the Japan SDGs Action Promotion Council, carry out “Japan SDGs Action Forum” to have multi-stakeholder discussions on what is necessary to bring about “change” to achieve SDGs by the year 2030, working together with the United Nations agencies. In the forum, we will discuss and transmit the direction that Japan should take in the future creating a common understanding of the latest development on the “leverage point”, which will be the key for the change in achieving SDGs, based on the international trends. At the same time, with an aim to accelerate “localization of SDGs” in Japan, we will share “good practices of solutions for regional issues”. We will also disseminate what actions and partnership stakeholders should aim for in building a scheme for SDGs action that will work in the world from the perspective of “Think Globally, Act Locally”. Now is the time for each one of us to take concrete actions to make change and create a sustainable society where no one left behind, overcoming the pandemic with SDGs as our beacon.

Let’s take a step forward this year.
From “I know it” to “I am doing it”.
Let’s take actions together to make change for the better.

GSDR Session

co-hosted with UNDESA

From the perspective of the Global Sustainable Development Report (GSDR)*, we will share a sense of crisis about what is lacking to achieve the SDGs, and then discuss what SDGs actions Japan is expected to take and the direction it should take in the future, as well as disseminate and share concrete examples from companies and organizations.

*GSDR is a United Nations publication aimed at strengthening the interface between science and policy at the High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF). The GSDR, which was assigned in 2015 to follow up and review the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, is an evidence-based instrument to assist policymakers to accelerate progress on the SDGs. The GSDR is drafted by an independent group of scientists (IGS) appointed by the UN Secretary-General and published every four years. The last report was published in 2019 and the 2023 report is currently under preparation. The Council's Chairman, Professor Norichika Kanie of Keio University's Graduate School of Media and Governance, is the only elected member of the IGS from Japan.

Young social entrepreneurs as change makers - Making people's voices heard for a society where "no one is left behind"

Youth Co:Lab(by UNDP and Citi Foundation)

New ideas and diverse perspectives not bound by stereotypes are essential to bringing about transformation in society. At present, however, many people are in a position where their voices are not easily reflected due to gender disparities, a sense of stagnation among young people in a seniority-based society, and prejudice against various groups.
In this session, young social entrepreneurs who are working to achieve the SDGs in Japan and abroad will take the stage to introduce their social enterprises that encourage people to "speak up and make their voices heard." They will also convey the importance of "participation" by diverse people in order to realize a society where "no one is left behind."

*Youth Co:Lab is an initiative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Citi Foundation to support social innovation and social entrepreneurship by young people to contribute to the achievement of the SDGs.
